Bob Woodward THE FINAL DAYS London Sidgwick & Jackson 1972 First Edition Hardcover, FINE/VERY GOOD, blue cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine,, stamp on half-title page "Property of Campbell Sharp Research Library",246p, unpriceclipped dustjacket. This is not an autobiography in the accepted sense of the term, for in it the author lives up to its title by using himself as a peg on which to hang an account of the last sixty years looked at through the eyes of a historian. The book falls into three parts. The First Look covers the period from 1895 to 1920, and includes Sir Charles's experiences in the First World War as well as his post-war Oxford career; the Second Look carries the story from 1920 to 1945, and contains a number of shrewd observations on the men and events, both at home and abroad, during those years; and the Third Look deals, somewhat cynically, with the permissive and extrovert age in which we now live.
