In 1914, she graduated from Syracuse University, wanting to be a writer. While in Europe, Dorothy Thompson became a leading journalist, selling many articles to the Philadelphia Public Ledger. She became a Vienna correspondent for the Chicago Daily News. And eventually, in 1925, she became the Public Ledger’s permanent correspondent in Berlin. At this point, she was gaining popularity in America. She interviewed several world leaders: Gustav Stresemann, Aristide Briand, Chicherin, Trotsky, and Atatürk (Kurth 65). Also, she interviewed other highly popular world figures such as Strauss and Freud, and according to Kurth, she “practically ‘owned’ Sigmund Freud”; American journalists had to practically ask Dorothy’s permission to see Freud This book is her story.
