Dore Schary was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1905. He first became interested in the theatre and in dramatic writing when he served as "dramatic counselor" at a summer camp in the Catskills. In 1932 he went to Hollywood, and for the next eight years wrote constantly for the movies. Among his many screen plays during this period was Boys Town, which won him an Academy Award.
