And because he tells of his own first-hand experiences, his book has the personal authenticity largely absent from a "thesis" work like The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence. He served in most of the political hot spots around the world. The author reluctantly concludes that the CIA is a necessity in this real world of competing clandestine services, but he does not waver from showing why the CIA has so often blundered.
