Relatively few of the great buildings of the Renaissance as of any other period have survived intact as their first architect designed them, and even in those of homogeneous design ascriptions are on the whole less certain than in works of sculpture or painting. In the matter of selection, this book has the failing of all anthologies--that it will satisfy n o one. The principle however has frankly been not to air new discoveries, still less the taste of the compiler, but to set together in convenient form masterpieces which have received general recognit ion, together with the sparing addition of a few works less well know but, it is claimed, also representative of the great fountain of civilization which we know as the Italian Renaissance.
